Types
- Full-face: the most protection; best all-round choice.
- Modular: full-face with a flip-up chin bar; popular with tourers.
- Open-face: classic look, but no chin protection.
Safety ratings
Look for a recognised standard for your region: ECE 22.06 (Europe), DOT (US), or the independent SHARP star rating. A higher price doesn't always mean a safer helmet, but a proper certification is non-negotiable.
Fit
A helmet should be snug all the way around with no pressure points, and it should not move when you shake your head. Cheeks should be firmly cupped; they'll break in slightly with use. Always try before you buy, and replace any helmet after a significant impact.
